Extra project

Recently in class we had a day to work on the extra project for Graphic Design 1, which I had forgotten about for awhile, so I thought I might as well use a personal project I've been working on for a while as the class project. The project is based around my senior project which is to build a recording studio at the Chehalem cultural center, the project is going to cost upwards of $3,000 so, on top of grants, we've started to raise some funds for it. My partner on the project is the drummer of a jazz combo and decided to raise funds by recording and selling a CD with Christmas jazz songs, half of the money going towards the band, and half going towards the project. My part of the project is designing all of the promotional posters and fliers and designing the CD (just front and back).

     (Top to bottom: 1/4 page flier, full page poster, info sheet(was at the desk where we were getting orders for more inf, printed on 11 X 17 poster board)) I designed these in Illustrator with one nights notice, I got home, designed and printed them (took all day) and they were ready the next day for the opening night of Guys and Dolls. Since then they've been tweaked a bit (costs added, names of people who couldn't be in band removed) they were quick but useful, I believe we ended up with a total of about 30 orders ($180!) plus talking to various people about spreading the news of the CD.

     The next big hurdle is the CD itself, here is my plan for the back cover, on top of this would be track numbers, info, etc, the plan was to have be in simple black text, so I might go through and lighten the background if I need to. At the moment, I'm still working on the front cover, with the floating finish date being December 14th, though the official poster says mid-December in case of hiccups, my current idea was to paint the front of the library and (if I had enough time) maybe put something like a dude playing saxophone on it. Below is what I have done on that so far (snow to be added in at end (aside from that little bit at the bottom of the pillars)).

Hey, here's the project that didn't get saved a while back, I've been playing in the pit for the musical, so I haven't really had the time to redo it until now.

Another ideas sketch with the Wacom tablet, inspired by the robot project in class, the idea is a giant robot on some rolling hills with nice landscape stuff, might add a caveman dude for scale, also thinking of moving the tree off of the robot, the hill enveloping it might need some work too.

 Made using the ellipse tool and all of the tools from the 'Width tool' group, also boredom, lots and lots of boredom.

Luccerfly

 Luccerfly
  This was a fun one to make, it's a butterfly based off of how I write my name French name 'Luc', it started normally, then a I started writing a second 'c' backwards and hooked into the first one, then I started stylizing it with straight lines until it started to look like this butterflies' wings, which gave me the inspiration to make this. To start I went through with the line tool and made an outline of what I wanted the final product to look like, but with singular lines. Then, I used the pen tool to make the stylized swooping to make the shapes more interesting than just straight, even lines. After that was done, I used my dad's CTE-430 Graphite to make the brush strokes across the butterfly's body and colored it in various ways before exporting it to another document with four different art boards for four different color patterns (seen above).

Beholder

 Here's a picture with darkened sketch lines of a beholder I made using my dad's old Wamco CTE-430 Graphite and his copy of illustrator. It took a number of tutorials over quite some time and this is just a rough concept sketch (about 30-45 minutes with getting used to the new medium). In the future I'll probably make his mouth bigger and work on making the back tentacle look more like it's actually further back on his head than all the other tentacles, along with just putting more into the all of the tentacles, here they look kinda tacked onto the bottom of his head.

Computer Arts Tutorial

This tutorial goes over the creation and manipulation of various layers from a scanned in sheet of various brush strokes for a specific effect. The tutorial also goes over various uses for the brushstrokes in the piece itself, from the backing for the various pieces of text to adding the look of wear and tear to the piece. The tutorial caught my eye because of the style of art, the interesting 'vintage' style is very appealing to me visually and I'd love to be able to do something like this in the future.
